Chapter 16: Last Off-Ramp Before Armageddon

It is interesting to think that one day the world will be populated by super computers and that people will never die because technology will be so developed that we can prevent death, but I highly doubt it will ever happen. I think it is possible for humans to one day develop the technology to create these super computers or to sustain life indefinitely, but I don’t think is possible that humans will be okay with using that technology.

I think that if humans ever developed the technology to create a computer that functions similar to the human brain, there will be regulations on how far you can take this technology. Do you give the computer human emotions? Is this ethical or right? These are questions that will need to be answered along with the creation of this technology. There is a certain amount of moral responsibility that must be interwoven with science and technology in society. Yes, we can develop technology that will prolong the life of human beings until people don’t die anymore, but what needs to be asked is should we develop this technology. I really think that if scientists ever attempt to do any of the things outlined in this article, they will be met with heavy opposition from a number of different groups.

It’s the same thing we’re seeing now with cloning or stem cell research; we have the technology and the ability to do these things, but we can’t necessarily use this technology because the moral and ethical questions that it brings up are just too much for many people to overlook.
