Proposal 2

Proposed topic/focus:

"The Perils of Indifference" towards the "grey" implications of science and technology. I plan to perform a rhetorical analysis on Elie Wiesel's "The Perils of Indifference" speech highlighting the correlation and implications between between and of science and technology, the violent century that Elie discusses in his speech, and society. I plan to incorporate the actual text of the speech, video footage of Elie Wiesel giving the speech, along with historical statistics, historical images, and historical texts to further my argument.

Proposed thesis/central point:

Indifference elicits no response. Indifference is not a response. Indifference is a consequence of ignorance. Americans have been and continue to be ignorant to the implications of the scientific and technological advancements we're making and those being made around the world. The result...a society tinged in red...blood.

Outline of argument to be made with at least 2 levels of detail:

Introduce Elie Weisel

  • Holocaust survivor

Introduce "The Perils of Indifference" speech/context it was given in

  • The White House

Historical context

  • Holocaust

Explain my method of analysis

  • Rhetorical Analysis
