Kosmos ~ Chapter 4
The best is yet to come. More can and should be done.
Who wouldn’t assent to the above? Whether you are wearing a clergy robe or a lab coat, there seems to be this commonality of seeking out a better tomorrow that overlaps religion and science. It is in this chapter that we delve further into this overlap between the two. To me this overlap can best be seen in the author’s summary of Paul’s interpretation of creation:
According to Paul, all creation is on a journey from meaninglessness to meaning, along a very specific path to boot. And not only that, but that path is good. And not only that, but that path is intended to be specifically for our benefit…And this, ultimately, is the order that emerges from chaos in the religions perception.
After reading this summary I found that the purpose of science (as we defined on the first day of class) and the purpose of creation in regard to society are indeed similar. Both science and creation involves mankind’s journey towards the pursuit of knowledge…making meaning out of meaninglessness. The idea that the path which we take in our life’s journey is intended to be for our benefit, I find, to be true both in regard to religion and science. I argue this because we embark on this journey for knowledge because we want to better ourselves and the world in which we live. We want to believe that “the best is yet to come” and we believe either one or the other or both is the vehicle towards achieving such meaning. Regardless, of which vehicle we choose to take along for our life’s chaotic ride we all take our respective places in our respective vehicles for one common reason: because “more can and should be done.”
