Kosmos Ch 12

I think that its wild to think of all of the possible things that could happen with the technology that we have, and how things can completely change in an instant, like in the blackout in New York. Its hard to imagine a world without lights, tvs, fridges, etc. and if it was all suddenly taken away I cannot see people reacting well. All that I can envision is violence, looting, basically an entirely unsafe enviroment. I think it is important for people to not get too lost in technology and to spend some time on other aspects, like literature.

It's interesting that you say that...

I was in Hilton Head with family the other week, when my dad started talking about this book (he thinks the title was Earth Abides) that he read for a college environmental studies class. Anyway, in the book, most of the world's population is wiped out. The novel's hero, has a hammer that he uses for a lot of things in the sort of post apocalyptic world. Because he fears that the library in his area will be looted for burning material, he used the hammer and some wood to board it up tight, hoping to "save" the knowledge that is contained there from vandals. As the book goes on, and new generations are born, they become more primitive and nomadic. In the end, his biggest regret is that he never taught his children to read. Within just a few generations, most of the knowledge contained in writing is virtually lost because no one can read it. They don't see the value of the library; they just want to know who the hammer gets passed down to.
